Man accused of trying to defraud bank of $40K

Charges have been laid after a man allegedly tried to cash a fraudulent cheque at an Owen Sound bank.

Owen Sound police were called about the incident on Monday.

The investigation determined a man had recently opened an account at the bank using identification documents that did not belong to him. He then turned up attempting to cash a cheque worth $40,283.99.

"The bank employees worked quickly to identify the fraudulent cheque and contacted police," said police.

A Guelph man was arrested at the scene and is charged with fraud over $5,000, obstructing a peace officer, possession of forged documents, and failure to comply with conditions of a probation order. The man was scheduled to appear for a bail hearing on Tuesday, police said.

The bank where the alleged incident is to have taken place was not identified by police.
