No one hurt in fire at Owen Sound rooming house

Careless smoking is being blamed for a fire at a rooming house in Owen Sound.

Nearly a dozen firefighters from Owen Sound Fire and Emergency Services were called to the Coach Inn rooming house on 2nd Avenue East around 1:45 a.m. on Saturday. When fire crews arrived heavy smoke was billowing from the building.

The blaze was contained to a third floor unit where a mattress was ablaze. Firefighters stretched a hose line to the third floor and quickly extinguished the blaze. The building was then ventilated before tenants were allowed back inside.

"Upon investigation, it was determined smoking materials caused the fire," fire officials said in a statement. "A working smoke alarm in the unit alerted the resident who was able to escape without injury."

A damage estimate was not released.
