Owen Sound teacher selected as winner of Outstanding Service Award

A teacher from Hillcrest Elementary School in Owen Sound has won a provincial outstanding service award.

The Bluewater District School Board (BWDSB) revealed on Tuesday that teacher Edie Duncan has been selected as the 2026 recipient of the Ontario Public School Boards’ Association (OPSBA) Outstanding Service Award for the Western Region.

According to OPSBA, this prestigious award is "presented annually to recognize one school board staff and/or volunteers from each region, whose service directly advances OPSBA’s mission, vision, and strategic priorities at their local school board, especially in advocacy, inclusion, equity, sustainability, and student well-being."

Duncan was recognized for numerous initiatives she has led over her teaching career, including land-based learning projects, such as maple syrup tapping, sustainability programs like Green Bin composting, and integrating Ojibway language and culture into daily classroom routines.

She was presented with her award during Hillcrest's Family Friday celebration at the school on May 15.

"Edie’s approach fosters inclusivity, empowers students to lead, and builds a strong sense of respect for the environment and Indigenous knowledge. This award reflects her lasting impact on students, schools, and the broader community. Recognizing local champions like Edie helps inspire others and affirms the values of equity, collaboration, and community engagement at the heart of public education," the OPSBA shared in a media release.
