Fire on downtown Chesley roof quickly quelled

Arran-Elderslie firefighters were able to quickly extinguish a blaze in downtown Chesley on Wednesday afternoon.

Crews from the Paisley and Chesley station responded to a call along First Avenue South, closing the road around the bridge as a result. Hanover fire crews also assisted.

Arran-Elderslie Fire Chief Steve Tiernan said the fire was a result of work being done in the area.

"A fire was started by a steel cable from a roofing ladder came in contact with a hydro wire, which then started a fire on one of the roofs in the downtown core," he said.

No injuries were reported and no residents will have to be displaced as a result.

Overall, Tiernan said there was not a lot of damage and praised the quick response by crews.

"Great work by obviously all the crews getting up there, getting the roof pulled back and getting it extinguished," he said. "What could have been a significant fire loss actually worked out very well... it was good work by everybody."

Emergency services were able to reopen the road around 7 p.m.
