The Ministry of Transportation has approved a new Community Safety Zone outside the Kincardine Township-Tiverton Public School (KTTPS).
The designation has been in the works since 2023, when Council requested additional measures to help enhance safety in the area which it said experiences "significant daily traffic."
The Community Safety Zone will extend along Hwy. 21 from approximately 300 metres south of the KTTPS entrance to 300 metres north of the entrance.
"The safety of our children, families, and all road users has been a priority for Council," Mayor Ken Craig said in a media release. "We're proud of the work that has gone into advocating for additional safety measures along this busy corridor. The new Community Safety Zone is an important step toward creating a safer environment for students travelling to and from Kincardine Township-Tiverton Public School."
A Community Safety Zone provides OPP with enhanced enforcement measures under the Highway Traffic Act, including increased penalties for certain traffic offences, like speeding, within the zone.
The designation will be in effect 24 hours a day, seven days a week, year-round. The zone will come into effect once the Ministry uncovers the official Community Safety Zone signs.
