Lucknow wastewater system nears capacity limits

Nearly all of Lucknow's wastewater system capacity has already been accounted for, prompting the Township of Huron-Kinloss to examine what upgrades may be needed to accommodate future growth.

A report presented during the township's October 5, 2026 Committee of the Whole meeting indicates the wastewater system is currently operating at approximately 80 per cent capacity based on existing connections.

However, when capacity reserved for future development and available infill lots is included, that figure climbs to approximately 99 per cent.

In its official meeting highlights, the township says "about 99% of the system’s total capacity is accounted for," although some of that capacity is not yet being used.

Municipal staff are now studying whether additional treatment capacity can be made available within Lucknow's existing wastewater lagoons.

The review will also help determine when more substantial infrastructure improvements might be necessary.

One possibility being examined for the longer term is the construction of a mechanical wastewater treatment plant. Such an upgrade could provide additional treatment capacity to support future residential and commercial development.

However, the municipality emphasizes that "No wastewater expansion or construction decision has been made."

The township says the existing system continues to serve current connections, while the study will help identify future infrastructure needs before improvements become necessary.

No construction timeline or estimated cost for a potential expansion has been announced.
