A total of eight Owen Sound Attack prospects saw ice time at the 2015 OHL Gold Cup over the weekend. Two of the potential new teammates ended up meeting in the final in Kitchener.
The tournament showcases some of the best U-16 players in the province with teams divided by the player's regional leagues. Eight teams competed for the trophy over the four day contest.
Victorious was team GTHL Blue, who beat Team Alliance 6-2 in the final game Sunday.
On that winning team was Attack first rounder and defenseman Markus Phillips. Over five games he had 1 goal and 4 points from the blueline. Phillips was happy to come away with the hardware but has his sights set much farther.
"I realize it's just the start of my journey so I can't dwell on that and keep going."
Against Phillips on Team Alliance was a possible new teammate in Nick Suzuki. The fellow first round pick by Owen Sound had 3 goals and 6 points.
"It was a great experience and I get to go to a great place like Owen Sound so hopefully it will be fun next year."
While not in that final game six other Attack prospects got playing time in the competition:
Regan Kimens (4th round) and Zachary Sheedy (7th round) played Team GTHL Red. 11th round selection Cayse Ton lead the Northern Ontario Hockey Alliance in scoring. Matthew Struthers (3rd round) and Riley Daniels (3rd round) played together on Team OMHA White. Mackenzie Warren (6th round) skated for Team OMHA Navy.
