The Listowel Cyclones wanted to create more chances closer to the net in Game 2 of the Cherrey Cup against Elmira but Jonathon Reinhart didn't budge.
After Jamie Huber split the Elmira defence and scored glove high for the opening goal of the game at 13:29 of the first, Reinhart shut the door until late in the second.
Listowel was stymied continuously as Jake Brown scored twice at 7:03 and 16:29 of the second period to give Elmira the lead. The second goal came on the power play.
It wasn't until late in the second when on a broken play, Listowel defenceman Riley Robertson wired a low shot through Reinhart to tie the game. It happened on a gutsy shift by Blake Nichol, Caleb Warren and Brady Anderson as they kept the puck down low and when it finally came out at the side of the net, Nichol spotted Robertson coming in from the point for the one timer.
In the third, Listowel went on the power play early after a boarding call on Tyler McBay but couldn't convert.
Then with just over seven minutes to play in the third period, Nichol was called for a slew foot which carries a four minute double minor and a game misconduct.
And Elmira didn't waste time scoring the go ahead goal 34 seconds into the power play as Jake Brown recorded the hat trick. He fired the puck high from the left side of the ice, and it fluttered over the shoulder of Brock Baier.
Special teams again played a role in the Elmira win as the team was 2-for-5 with the man advantage. Listowel was 0-for-5.
In the series, of the six goals Elmira has scored, five have come with the man advantage.
Game 3 is in Listowel Tuesday night at 7:30pm.
