Young Canada Week In Goderich

The 69th annual Goderich Young Canada Week Pee Wee hockey tournament gets underway later this morning.

Publicity Director Richard Madge says it's a smaller tournament this year, largely because they were unable to get enough girls teams for a girls division.

Madge says this year they'll have a total of 22 teams split into "C", "DD/AE" and a local league.

There'll be games this weekend and next.

Madge says the official opening ceremony will take place at 7 p.m. Friday with M-P Ben Lobb and M-P-P Lisa Thompson on hand.

Madge says part of the opening ceremonies will be a salute to a team from the 1958 Young Canada Week Tournament.

The Stratford Y's Men, because they were sponsored by the YMCA, showed up with eleven players, including Nick Libbet and Hank Monteith, who both went on to play for the Detroit Rred Wings and won the "A" division.

Madge explains back then the tournament also featured a Grand Championship.

The Stratford team defeated Montreal, the "AA"champions at that time, and the "B" champions from Goderich that included Gary Doak, who went on to play for the Red Wings and Bruins.
