Cyclones preparing for this weekend's test

The Listowel Cyclones will be tested this weekend with back to back games against the Kitchener-Waterloo Siskins.

Listowel has posted a 2-2-1 record in its first five games.

And while there have been some good strides forward, Cyclones' coach Jesse Cole wants to see more consistency from the team heading into the weekend.

"We haven't put together a full 60 yet," said Cole during Tuesday night's practice. "We talked about the idea that we're focusing on five minutes at at time, being in the moment and understanding we are going to go through adversity every game."

Statistically there are some highlights.

Listowel's power play is 9-for-21 in the early going.

"We're getting pucks to the net in traffic, good sticks for tips, you know, keeping things simple," said Cole. "When we keep it simple, we're generating and sometimes what happens on a power play you want to get cute."

And scoring overall has been spread out.

Captain Jaden Goldie is leading the way with nine points, which is good for second overall in the GOJHL in the young season.

Just before stepping onto the ice for practice Tuesday, Goldie says he's trying to lead by example.

"I think that's been the main thing, just doing what I can on the ice," said Goldie. "I take a lot of pride in Cyclones' hockey, you play defense first and the offense will come."

Goldie was one of many hockey players who missed a whole year of competition because of the pandemic.

"It's not always easy to stay motivated to stay in shape and eat right and all that kind of stuff," said Goldie. "It was tough but really grateful now that we are back playing."

Listowel hosts Kitchener-Waterloo Friday night at 7:30 p.m., which will be the feature game on OHA Hockey on CKNX brought to you by PBJ Cleaning Group.

Then the two teams will face-off again on Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
