An Amherstburg cyclist is taking legal action after a crash that forced his left leg to be amputated.
In the early morning hours of September 30 Richard Orum, 26, was riding his bike down Alma St. in Amherstburg when he was hit by a minivan from behind.
Windsor lawyer Jennifer Bezaire, a partner at Greg Monforton & Partners, says Orum will be launching a suit against the driver in the next few months.
"He ended up flying off his bike, landed on the van and then flew into a ditch," she says. "I think he's going to be in (hospital) for the long haul. He's going to need extensive rehabilitation."
Bezaire says she's looking for witnesses of the crash or anyone who may have seen Orum leading up to the incident. He was wearing a reflective Coors Light backpack with a flashlight strapped to it.
"He was basically lit up like a Christmas tree," Bezaire says.
Surgeons tried to save his leg, but they were forced to amputate it last week in London. Orum also fractured his pelvis and spine.
Bezaire says Amherstburg police have identified the driver and circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation.
