The Windsor Regional Cancer Centre will now offer recovery services to cancer patients who receive a vital stem cell transplant.
The autologous transplantation is done in London or Hamilton after the patient's last chemotherapy dose to help regenerate bone marrow. Around 21 patients from the Windsor-Essex area received this specialized treatment last year.
Dr. Carolyn Hamm says the Day 1 Program allows patients to come home for the three week recovery process after this treatment.
"Instead of having to send our patients away for a month those patients will come back here, they'll be able to recover here on the impatient unit. It's a skill set that we have more than enough to handle here at Windsor Regional Hospital," says Hamm.
The new service will be available starting April 1. It's being funded through Cancer Care Ontario.
