UPDATE: Woman critical after apartment fire in Windsor

A woman remains in hospital after a fire broke out on the second floor of a seniors' apartment building in Windsor.

The fire started in the second-floor apartment unit at around 7 a.m. on Tuesday, on Rivard Avenue near Tecumseh Road East.

A woman was rescued from her balcony as firefighters fought to bring the blaze under control.  Fire officials originally said she was being treated as a precaution, but her condition is now listed as critical but stable after she was taken to hospital with smoke inhalation.

Investigators from the Office of the Ontario Fire Marshal attended the scene, however, the cause of the fire remains undetermined but it is not believed to be suspicious.

The fire caused around $80,000 to the second-floor apartment unit and an estimated $220,000 in damages to the building.
