Funding to improve outcomes for Indigenous families

Saying the Indigenous community has been underserved and disrespected for far too long, Windsor West MPP Lisa Gretzky has announced funding to improve outcomes for those families.

She was on hand on December 18 to provide a cheque for $75,000 to the Windsor-Essex Children's Aid Society and Can Am Indian Friendship Centre.

"This collaboration between the Windsor-Essex Children's Aid Society and the Can Am Indian Friendship Centre is an essential step towards improving outcomes for Indigenous families under stress," she said.

The grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation will help achieve six primary goals, including decreasing trauma experienced by Indigenous families interacting with the Child Welfare System and promote reunification of families.

It is also meant to repair the reputation and relationship of organizations like the CAS with Indigenous people.

"We are committed to righting the wrongs of the past, as well as respecting and honouring the culture and identity of Indigenous families," said Executive Director of the Windsor-Essex CAS, Derrick Drouillard.
