Construction on the new Catholic Central High School is finally moving forward as the Windsor Essex Catholic School Board received approval to go ahead with a tendering process.
The government gave the green light for the $29.4 million high school Friday.
“This is a major milestone for this project and we’re very eager to move on to the next step of selecting a contractor to build this wonderful new school for our community,” said Director of Education Terry Lyons.
Construction on the school, to be located on McDougall Street, is expected to get started this year and be completed by the 2022-2023 school year.
The funding for the project was originally announced in 2014 and received final approval in 2016. Since then, the board has been looking to finalize the location for the new school. It was initially slated for the former Windsor Arena site however the school board chose to purchase the site on McDougall in 2019.
“This is very exciting news for our community, and for our students, their families and our staff,” said Trustee Bernie Mastromattei, who represents the area in which the new building will be located. “We’re looking forward to the day we can break ground and get moving on building this new school.”
The WECDSB expects to receive tender pricing from pre-qualified contractors and award a contract in early March. Once trustees have approved the tender the design will be revealed to the school community.
The new state of the art school will have 938 student spaces.
