Gretzky pulls off a win in Windsor West

Lisa Gretzky is heading back to Queen's Park to represent Windsor West. This time, she'll work without regional party support.

Gretzky received 42 per cent of the vote in Thursday's election.

Progressive Conservative candidate John Leontowicz came in second place with 35 per cent, and Liberal Party candidate Linda McCurdy came in a distant third with nearly 13 per cent.

Gretzky is the only NDP candidate representing the region. Essex MPP Taras Natyshak and Windsor-Tecumseh MPP Percy Hatfield did not seek re-election this term. Both their seats went to the Progressive Conservative Party.

"It's bitter-sweet looking at what's happened in the other two ridings. But what I know is, that means that we just have to work even harder than we have been to be the voice for the people in Windsor-Tecumseh and out in Essex to ensure the government is not going to continue cutting healthcare or public education," said Gretzky.

She said she'd like to work with the newly elected PC representatives to serve the community.

"I hope that they are willing to work together as a region. What I have seen based on Doug Ford's previous government is that they are often not willing to work with the other parties," said Gretzky. "I'm hoping that the two newly elected MPPs are willing to put that partisanship aside and to really push the premier to work with the other parties because that's what our region expects, and frankly, that's what they deserve."

Even fewer voters in Windsor-West cast a ballot this year compared to the 2018 election. Unofficial results from Elections Ontario show only 33 per cent of eligible voters participated in the election. In 2018, there was a 43 per cent voter turnout.
