Electoral district changes in Essex County

If you live in Lakeshore west of the Puce River and north of Hwy. 401, you're now in the riding of Windsor-Tecumseh.

A three-member panel has completed its review of federal electoral districts across Ontario, and for some Essex County residents, it will mean a change in their representation in the House of Commons.

Windsor-Tecumseh MPP Andrew Dowie congratulated the work of the Federal Electoral Boundaries Commission Monday morning.  It started its work last August.

"Despite the municipal boundary between Tecumseh and Lakeshore, the Russell Woods, Amy Croft, and Patillo Road areas feel like a common community with the Town of Tecumseh," he said. "Many of these residents are already assigned a Tecumseh mailing address by Canada Post."

Pelee Island and some of Eastern Lakeshore will become part of the riding of Chatham-Kent-Leamington. Walpole Island will join the new electoral district of Sarnia-Lambton-Bejwanong.

Ontario gains an extra federal riding with the review, going from 121 to 122 Members of Parliament.

The quota for each electoral district is 116,590 residents, and Ontario's population recently grew from 12.8-million to 14.2-million.

The Commission's report said the population of Southernmost Ontario grew 6.1 per cent between 2011 and 2021, from 573,137 residents to 608,347.

The soonest the changes can take effect is 2024.

The Commission reviews federal electoral boundaries every ten years.
