Essex Town Council could decide Monday night to turn Jackson Street in Colchester into a one-way street.
The town hired RC Spencer Associates to find solutions to parking woes around Colchester Park and Colchester Harbour in March 2022.
When the weather warms up, Colchester sees an influx of beachgoers and finding parking has been an issue for years.
A report to councillors recommends turning Jackson Street between Murdoch Street to Sullivan Street into a one-way, southbound road with parking in the existing northbound lane. It would create another 23 parking spaces.
The consultant admitted the change might not be enough to address the increased demand for parking in the summer months.
A second option would also see Sullivan Street become a one-way road with on-street parking, but town staff don't recommend it. They believe it would impede access to the boat ramp causing long lineups of vehicles off-loading vessels into the water. However, the report notes councillors could make the change in the future if they wanted.
The second option would add another 37 parking spaces along Jackson Street and Sullivan Street.
If councillors approve the change, funding to repaint the road and add signage would come out of the Public Works Department budget.
