The Town of Tecumseh and the Municipality of Leamington are on board with a regional approach to waste management, clearing one more hurdle for organic waste collection in the region.
In order for the service to be uploaded to the County of Essex, at least four of the seven local municipalities in the county will have to pass similar resolutions.
Tecumseh Mayor Gary McNamara said it makes sense on a number of fronts.
"Number one to save that landfill. Number two, obviously organics is coming forward from the province. The other one we need to look at is, we're the only jurisdiction in the province left in Ontario that have all of these individual little contracts," said McNamara.
Requests for proposals for a new garbage collection service provider could be issued this fall, but changes are not expected until 2025.
McNamara indicated that by taking a regional approach they will get more competitive offers.
"By increasing the tonnage within one contract, it makes far more sense in terms of affordability moving forward, and creating some competition," said McNamara.
Changes to the service would include weekly organic waste pick-up and every other week garbage collection.
"The smelly part of the garbage pick-up is the organics," McNamara assures residents.
