UPDATE: Stuck freighter in Detroit River finally freed

A freighter run aground off downtown Detroit has now been refloated.

The U.S. Coast Guard has announced that tugboats have finally freed the Barbro G, which ran aground in the Detroit River Monday morning.

The 623-foot freighter, flying the Portuguese flag, was in the Belle Isle Anchorage when the crew noticed a malfunctioning thruster shortly after 7:30 a.m. Monday, which resulted in the ship getting stuck.

She was on a stopover in Detroit while delivering a shipment of wheat from Thunder Bay to Italy.

There have been no reports of injuries or damage.

The Coast Guard reported that a third-party class society will examine the freighter to determine if she is seaworthy enough to continue the journey.

Investigators are still trying to determine how the ship ran aground in the first place.
