An extreme cold warning is in effect for southern Ontario including Sarnia-Lambton. Environment Canada says a strong cold front crossing the region is bringing much colder temperatures and gusty north winds. Wind chills between -20 C and -30 C are expected Thursday afternoon with values of -30 C and -35 C overnight and Friday morning. Extreme cold warnings are issued when very cold temperatures or wind chill create elevated health risks including frost bite and hypothermia. We're advised to wear appropriate clothing, dress in layers and limit our time outdoors. Exposed areas like the head, neck and face should be shielded from the wind. Some people including the homeless, infants and seniors and those with certain medical conditions like diabetes are at greater risk than others for frost bite and hypothermia. Lambton Public Health also has a cold weather alert in effect. The public health authority advises local agencies that provide shelter and assistance to the homeless to prepare for an increase in demand.
