Vote On Land Code At Kettle Point

The Chippewas of Kettle and Stony Point are among a growing number of First Nations trying to speed up the process of land acquisitions and transfers.

Eligible members are being called to a ratification vote March 6 from 9 till 8 at the gym at Hillside School.

Manager Lorraine George says they've established a new Land Code that would allow council to take control of many land management matters.

Currently, approval for any land purchase or transfer, including one band member selling land to another, must be approved by the Ministry of Indian Affairs and Northern Development.

George says they purchased the Faulker Farm land across from the Kettle Point Plaza for development 38 years ago and it took some 30 years for the sale to be approved by the Crown.

The Land Code must be approved by a vote of 50 per cent plus 1 to be enacted.
