Funding Cutbacks Hurt Roads

A group of Lambton County mayors is pushing for increased infrastructure funding for rural municipalities.

A delegation including Enniskillen Mayor Kevin Marriott recently met with representatives from the provincial Finance Minister's office at the Ontario Good Roads Assocation conference in Toronto. A total of six municipalities were represented.

Marriott is concerned over a 37 per cent cut to the Ontario Municipal Partnership Fund (OMPF) over the past two years. Over half of the funding is dedicated to the upkeep of roads.

He's hopeful the money will be restored under a new formula to be introduced in 2016.

Marriott notes county roads can quickly wear down with some carrying 100 trucks per day.

He says the group will later meet with senior Ministry of Finance staff to further discuss the issue.
