Mich Senators Ask Obama To Stop Nuclear Repository

Ontario Power Generation's proposal to build a permanent nuclear repository less than a mile from Lake Huron at Kincardine appears headed to U.S. President Obama's desk.

U.S. Senators Debbie Stabenow and Gary Peters have introduced a Senate resolution, urging the administration to oppose the proposal.

The Senators say putting a nuclear waste dump on the shores of Lake Huron puts the Great Lakes at risk of radioactive contamination. They say preserving the health and safety of the Lakes should be a top priority because it's the source of drinking water for over 40 million people on both sides of the border.

The resolution urges the President and Secretary of State John Kerry to work with their Canadian counterparts to stop OPG's proposal, which the company maintains will be safe.
