Firefighter's Field Days Event Aims To Educate

Fire safety and awareness is the main goal for this weekend's Firefighter's Field Days in Corunna.

The two day event begins Friday evening and features live musical entertainment at 8pm and 10pm. Saturday is geared more towards the family with a parade, face painting, BBQ, raffle, and more live band performances.

Field Days Chairman Kevin Smalls says they will hold a live fire demonstration on Saturday with participation from the public.

"We've already had a number of residential structure fires in the township this year, and we want to remind people that education plays a huge role in the prevention of these events," says Smalls. "Ontario has had 60 fire-related deaths in 2015 already, which is a significant increase from this time last year."

The live fire demonstration includes a flash over burn, grease fire, and fire extinguisher simulator.

Smalls says many people don't have the opportunity to use a fire extinguisher normally, so this opportunity teaches the public what to do in case of an emergency.

"We just want to get people to try this out so when the time comes if they actually need to use it, that's not something brand new to them," he says.

Saturday's parade features a display of new and old fire machinery and gets underway at 11am.
