Winter Highway Plan Welcomed

Plympton-Wyoming's mayor welcomes action being taken by the province to improve winter road maintenance, but he questions whether it's enough.

In response to a critical auditor general's report, the province has pledged to add more equipment in rural and congested urban areas, apply more anti-icing liquids to road surfaces before storms hit and work with contractors to improve equipment readiness.

Mayor Lonny Napper hopes it'll help along a crash-prone stretch of Hwy. 402 in his municipality.

The auditor general found that snow clearance on major highways took over twice as long after the Liberal government privatized road maintenance.

There have been several multi-vehicle pileups on the 402 the past three winters including a double fatality in 2013 and another in 2014 that saw five Plympton-Wyoming firefighters injured while responding to a crash.
