OPG To Preserve LGS For Possible Conversion

Ontario Power Generation has committed to keep its idle Lambton Generating Station open for possible future conversion to another fuel.

LGS and Nanticoke Generating Station both stopped burning coal in 2013 as part of the provincial government's strategy to combat climate change.

Spokesman Neal Kelly says the location of LGS made it necessary to preserve because natural gas supply is close at hand.

OPG says it will close Nanticoke but about 25 staff will continue to work at Courtright.

Kelly says both sites have qualified as well to bid on solar projects through the Independent Electricty System Operator.

OPG will continue to own both sites.
