Public Opposition To Cathcart Bike Lanes

A petition against the proposed Cathcart Blvd. bike lanes is headed to Sarnia council Monday.

Over 80 people have indicated their opposition to the $80,000 plan that would see some street parking eliminated and traffic lanes reduced.

Mayor Mike Bradley says residents, mainly cyclists, voiced concerns at a public consultation meeting at the beginning of August.

"I'm very supportive of bike lanes. I went to the public meeting," says Bradley. "Some of the issues raised were quite legitimate. One is if you're going to do it, do the whole thing. Don't do it halfway."

Sarnia city councillors have been recommended by staff to approve the implementation of the first phase during Monday's council meeting. The lanes from Colborne to Murphy Rd. would link the Howard Watson Nature Trail to Canatara Park.

"If you look at streets, (Cathcart Blvd.) is probably safer than most streets because of the way it's been designed. Versus somewhere you're trying to protect bikers, like Lakeshore," says Bradley.

The second phase would continue the lanes to either Modeland Rd. or Canatara Park, depending on the budget available.

City council's meeting begins at 4pm Monday.
