Trails Chair Disappointed Bike Lane Blocked

The chair of Bluewater Trails says it seems a precedent has been set that bike lanes are not welcome in Sarnia.

Jared Fedora is disappointed Sarnia council has rejected a proposal on Cathcart Blvd. from Colborne to Murphy Rd.

Monday, councillors unanimously voted against an $80,000 project citing concerns about the reduction of traffic lanes and the elimination of parking.

130 neighbours signed a petition in opposition to the plan saying the stretch is already safe for cyclists and the addition of bike lanes could actually jeopardize the harmony that currently exists.

Fedora, however, says it's disappointing the need to increase the city's cycling infrastructure, as identified in the Transportation Master Plan, has already hit a roadblock.

Fedora says they aren't sure which road will be looked at next for bike lanes, but they are in desperate need for a direct east/west corridor within the city.

Cathcart Blvd. was originally chosen to establish a link between the Howard Watson Nature Trail and Canatara Park.
