Sarnia-Lambton Stays Blue But Country Red

Sarnia-Lambton's remarkable run as a bellwether riding ended in Monday's federal election.

The riding remains in the Tory fold with Conservative Marilyn Gladu's victory but for the first time since 1963 a member of the winning party nationally was not elected.

Justin Trudeau's liberals stormed to a majority win.

Gladu was projected the winner in Sarnia-Lambton at 11:12pm. After midnight she had opened up a lead of over 3,000 votes over the NDP's Jason McMichael.

The professional engineer had 39 per cent of the vote, McMichael 31 per cent, Liberal Dave McPhail 27 per cent and Green Party candidate Peter Smith 2.6 per cent.

In Lambton-Kent-Middlesex Riding Conservative Bev Shipley was declared the winner at 10:18pm, being re-elected to a fourth consecutive term.

Shipley had 50 per cent of the vote, well ahead of Liberal candidate Ken Filson's 29 per cent. The NDP's Rex Isaac had 16 per cent and the Green Party's Jim Johnston 3.3 per cent.
