The City of Sarnia will rejoin the Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO). Sarnia council voted 5-1 in favour of a motion brought forward by Councillor Anne-Marie Gillis Monday. Councillor Dave Boushy voted against it while Mayor Mike Bradley, and councillors Andy Bruziewicz and Mike Kelch were absent. Of the 444 municipalities in the province, 421 belong to AMO. Gillis says the city has not been a full member for 23 years, denying city councillors the opportunity to give the community a voice. "We have allocated in our budget for 2015 for special projects. What other special project would we be advancing, the City of Sarnia, than belonging to AMO," she says.
"It's money well spent and we will see the returns of it." Councillor Dave Boushy says the city currently has a joint AMO membership with Lambton County.
It would cost the city $12,000 to register separately, on top of the $3,800 already paid through the joint membership.
