Sarnia Councillor Launches Youth Task Force

A city councillor is forming a youth task force to engage young community leaders to help build the city's future.

Scholten says youth are more adaptable to change, and the task force will help them feel empowered and comfortable in a leadership position. She hopes the task force, in its early stages, will get young leaders involved in community efforts.

"If we can get them inspired to feel like they're leaders now, then they're going to be better and stronger leaders in the future."

Scholten says she got the task force idea while campaigning in the 2014 municipal election.

She says they will be open to ideas both big and small. "I'm still working on the focus and the goals," says Scholten. "Right now, we're in the phase where I'm still engaging and accepting applicants for members who want to join." She made the announcement Monday morning at Bright's Grove Public School, where she was motivated by a grade 6 class that suggested all city parks should have options for recycling. Scholten was able to get a motion passed by city council to investigate recycling programs in other communities.
