County Pushes For Pilot Project

Lambton County Council unanimously passed a motion Wednesday, asking the provincial government to consider it as the site for a guaranteed annual income pilot project.

The idea is to replace various social and welfare payments with a tax credit similar to the Guaranteed Income Supplement for seniors.

If someone earns less or has less than the poverty line, they would be topped up to a point above the poverty line.

Sarnia Mayor Mike Bradley brought forward the motion Wednesday. He says Lambton County would be an ideal location, given its past leadership and innovation in providing social services with programs such as the Circles initiative.

The federal government is also considering the concept -- a Liberal-dominated parliamentary committee recently called on the Trudeau government to explore the idea.

A pilot project in Manitoba in the 1970's virtually eliminated poverty but was never implemented because of a change in government.

One in seven Canadians lives in poverty, including a quarter of a million seniors.
