Powering Down For Earth Hour

Around the globe Saturday night, lights are being dimmed to mark Earth Hour.

Its the ninth annual event in Canada.

Bluewater Power President and CEO Janice McMichael Dennis says we're urged to power down from 8:30pm until 9:30pm Saturday evening.

"What we're finding is that Earth Hour and other activities promoting energy conservation and awareness have really done their job at this point," says McMichael Dennis."We find that with our customers, certainly an awareness of energy conservation and consumption has become a year long activity and no longer does it seem to get the same attention because you don't need an event to recognize it so much."

McMichael Dennis says last year area residents achieved a minimal reduction in energy use.

Sarnia's first year participating in 2008, there was a 3.5% reduction in power.

OLG Casino Point Edward will either turn off or dim non-essential lighting between 8:30pm and 9:30pm Saturday night as part of Earth Hour.

OLG is also encouraging its employees to participate in Earth Hour at home by turning off the lights.
