Salmon Fishing Here To Stay In Lambton

The Bluewater Anglers hatchery manager says salmon sport fishing is here to stay, no matter what scientists say.

Jake Van Rooyen is reacting to a Michigan State University study that predicts the end of the Lake Huron salmon fishery because Alewives, the main food source for salmon, has declined drastically.

"We will never see the levels that we've previously seen because there isn't the bait fish out there to support them," says Van Rooyen.

"We will still have a good salmon fishery, we just won't see the numbers that we saw in the 80's where you could go out for a couple of hours and catch your limit."

Bluewater Anglers plan to release about 85,000 salmon into Lake Huron this year.

The 40th annual Salmon Derby begins April 29.
