It's been a very busy four days for some Sarnia employees.
City Engineer Andre Morin says the sewage pumping stations couldn't keep up with nearly 50 mm (2 in) of rain that fell last Thursday and again Sunday night into Monday.
Morin says vacuum trucks had to be called in to pump off excess water to try to prevent basement flooding.
"With that amount of rain, and still at this time of year where the ground is somewhat frozen and not draining all that well, you're going to have a lot of ponding and a lot of water sitting on the roads where drains are potentially blocked," says Morin.
"It's better to have it sitting the roads and in the grass rather than overwhelming the system and flooding basements."
Low lying areas including the basin at Canatara Park are underwater.
