College Pow Wow Celebrates Aboriginal Culture (VIDEO)

Members of Lambton College and the Sarnia-Lambton community joined in celebration of Aboriginal culture and life Thursday.

About 300 people attended the college's 24th annual Pow Wow in the gymnasium.

Aboriginal Student Council member Wahbzii Shognosh says people dressed in full regalia danced to traditional drumming and singing.

"We're celebrating our heritage and our people," says Shognosh, who had never danced at a Pow Wow before and was welcomed in with a ceremonial dance. "You feel like you're connected with your people because you just have to stick to the beat of the drum, and you work up a good sweat."

Doors opened at 10am, with ceremonial dances at 11am and festivities continuing until 3pm.

People were also encouraged to visit information and vendor booths and to take part in other activities such as native arts and crafts.

Vice President of Student Success Rob Kardas says the event, hosted by the Aboriginal Student Council and Aboriginal Cultural/Learning Centre helps spread cultural awareness.

"It's really important for our students here. Our students at Lambton College, and specifically our Aboriginal Student Council are excellent at making sure people really appreciate the lands that we're on," he says.

Lambton College provides a culturally sensitive environment for students with Aboriginal backgrounds, including First Nation, Inuit and Métis.
