Local Canoe And Kayak Race To Ride The Waves

Canoers and kayakers will be dipping their paddles into the water for the annual Sydenham Canoe and Kayak Race.

This is the 43rd time the race hits the waves. All three races kick off at Mosside Rd. just west of County Rd. 79.

  • The 7 km races: recreation-competitive, recreation-lazy, kayak-novice, V.I.P., touring
  • The 12 km races: men's amateur, kayak amateur and open (ladies and mixed)
  • The 16 km races have three expert classes: men's, mixed and kayak
Spokesman Rick Battson says that it's really a tradition before spring.

"Well it certainly has a lot of history and we have a lot of people to come back year after year to the race," he says. "It's sanctioned by the Ontario Marathon Canoe Racing Association and so we get those competitive people coming out, but in the community, we have lots of different classes. It's really for fun and it's kind of a rite of spring I think."

All the winners will receive a prize. The money that is being donated goes to teaching children about the outdoors in the St. Clair area.
