St. Clair Township Council has voted unanimously to donate $25,000 to the relief effort in Fort McMurray.
Mayor Steve Arnold says their council has, over the decade or so, established relationships with councils in Fort Mac, Strathcona and Wood Buffalo.
"One of the reasons why is we looked at development in marketing for our local industries that are building modules to send and supplying all sorts of materials for out there," he says.
"There's been a lot of people that have had the opportunity to work in the west and got their start there at the oilsands in different projects. We just felt it was the appropriate thing to do."
Mayor Arnold says they will be in direct contact with councils in the fire zones to determine if they would like to receive the money up front or if they should donate it to the Red Cross Relief effort.
The money will come from an account set aside for tipping fees.
