Energy Conversion Plan Worries Council

Sarnia City Council is letting the provincial government know, it is not in favour of any plans that will see the end of natural gas for home heating.

Recently leaked cabinet documents revealed the provincial government's plan to move homes and businesses off of natural gas to electricity for heating.

Councillor Cindy Sholten says it's unacceptable.

"I think I was just really concerned in general when I heard of the possibility of the change because my own hydro rates are just incredible, they keep increasing and the entire community is really concerned about the overall increase on their energy bills," says Sholten. "If this were to happen I just see it being the crumble of families in Sarnia as we know it, industry, businesses, I'm very worried for that to happen."

A motion was passed unanimously during Monday's council meeting to send a letter to the Government of Ontario asking to rethink its proposed energy conversion plan.
