County Urges Delay On Cap And Trade

Lambton County Council is urging the provincial government to delay the implementation of its new cap-and-trade policy.

The plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions is set to take effect next year.

Sarnia Mayor Mike Bradley says a one year delay would allow community impacts to be assessed.

"The major industries in this province do not have a handle on what the economic and social impacts are going to be on their operations and employees," says Bradley.

Companies would be charged for exceeding set emission limits but could purchase credits from industries below the cap.

The province has issued free allowances to 14% of large greenhouse gas emitters until 2020 and will revisit the policy then.
