Work started on another 31 single family homes in the Sarnia area last month.
Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) Market Analyst Anthony Passarelli says that compares to 22 starts in May 2015.
"You've seen a little bit stronger demand for housing so far this year, and the number of listings of homes available for purchase has been shrinking a bit," says Passarelli.
"So it's a little bit harder to find what you're looking for amongst the resale homes and that usually leads to more people looking to a builder to build a new home."
Passarelli says 60 new homes have been constructed so far this year, compared to 40 during the same period last year.
The monthly statistics cover Sarnia, St.Clair Township and Point Edward.
