Council Being Courted For Indoor Tennis Facility

A Petrolia teen is hoping to spearhead a fundraising effort toward an indoor tennis facility in Sarnia-Lambton.

Matt Mueller plans to deliver a presentation to Sarnia Council Monday.

He says there is a need for an indoor place to play year round and that nearly half of the cars in the parking lot at the Tennis House in Port Huron are Canadian.

Sarnia Mayor Mike Bradley welcomes the presentation, but says further information would be needed.

"There's no question that tennis has become a much popular sport in the community, after diminishing for a number of years," says Bradley.

"City council just authorized close to $80,000 to upgrade a number of tennis courts in the community, just in the last two weeks. So I think council will enjoy hearing the presentation but then the journey will start, as it did with many other facilities, do the feasibility, look at the operating costs and then make a final decision."

Mueller was honoured for his leadership by Ontario's Lieutenant Governor this past March.

He raised nearly $25,000 to refurbish the Mary Beach Tennis Courts in Petrolia.

Mueller's fundraising for that project included a significant donation from Canada's number one tennis star Milos Raonic.
