Derek Drouin Sets His Sights On Rio

World champion high jumper Derek Drouin was in Sarnia Saturday as he makes his final preparations ahead of the Rio games in August.

The 26-year-old Corunna native says it's good to be back to see family and friends, who've supported him since day one.

Concerns surrounding the Zika Virus have some athletes choosing to stay home, but Drouin says competing at the Olympic Games wasn't something he wanted to pass up.

"With something this big you kind of trust people are going to get things done, obviously there is always going to be scares for one thing or another," says Drouin.

"As an athlete that's kind of the attitude you have to have, be a little naive to it I guess."

Drouin says his experience winning a bronze medal at the London games have helped ease the nerves heading into Rio.

"It's definitely the goal to improve on past performances, I definitely feel like I'm more of a mature and experienced athlete, so hopefully that experience will serve me well in Rio".

The summer games begin August 5 in Rio de Jeneiro, Brazil.
