Village Of Pt. Edward Appoints New Mayor

The Village of Pt. Edward has appointed a new mayor.

Council unanimously promoted Deputy Mayor Bev Hand to the position during its meeting Tuesday night.

Hand becomes the villages second female mayor, following in her mother's footsteps.

Barb Horner held the office of Point Edward Mayor from 1997 to 2000.

"My mother passed away in April and my first thought was 'I've got to call my mom!' because she would be so happy," said Hand.

"She was happy when I got on council and she always thought that I should aspire to the top position. I'm sorry to lose Larry (MacKenzie) and it's not the way I would have envisioned this happening but I'll do the best I can to take over and follow in his footsteps."

Councillor Janice Robson will slide into the deputy mayor position.

Hand says they will discuss options for filling the empty council seat at their next meeting.

"There's a couple of different things we can do, look at past results from the election, put an ad in the paper and solicit interest to appoint someone."

Larry MacKenzie unexpectedly announced his resignation last week, for personal reasons, after 28 years on village council and the past three as mayor.

Village CAO Jim Burns said MacKenzie wanted to spend more time with family including his young grandchildren.
