Lambton County Unable To Collect $4M Windfall

Lambton County is still trying to collect millions of dollars in uncollected fines, but Warden Bev MacDougall is still hopeful that will change.

Just under $4-million is owed to the county after the Mike Harris government downloaded collection responsibilities from the province to municipalities.

MacDougall maintains Queens Park is moving to correct that.

"I'm pleased that the province is working to tighten up the legislation," she says. "They're looking at things like collecting defaulted fines through the property tax system as well as through the licensing system."

That legislation, however, has been on the books for three years now with no action taken.

Lambton County has paid a third party collection agency for almost ten years, with about 73% of tickets issued, primarily under the Highway Traffic Act, being collected.
