UPDATE: Army Of Firefighters Battle Power Plant Blaze

It took as many as 100 firefighters from 30 departments to gain control of a raging fire that broke out at the St. Clair Power Plant in Michigan Thursday evening.

Volunteers from the St. Clair Township Fire Department's Corunna station also responded to help battle the blaze at the coal-fired plant.

In a public statement, DTE Energy said the fire had been extinguished, but first responders remained on scene monitoring the situation.

The utility says there were no injuries and no threat to the community.

Air monitoring was continuing with readings said to be within normal limits outside the facility perimeter.

DTE Energy expects the site will remain closed indefinitely and the plant's 294 employees are being re-assigned to other facilities.

The OPP closed St. Clair Pkwy. between Stanley Line and Oil Springs Line and Bentpath Line between Hwy. 40 and the parkway because of reduced visibility in heavy smoke.

The roads reopened just before 9am Friday.

The fire, that broke out around 6:30pm Thursday, reportedly originated in an electrical generation unit within the facility.
