Cab Driver Robbed In City's Northend

Sarnia police are looking for a male suspect in his 20's after a 72-year-old cab driver was robbed Sunday morning.

Police responded to a complaint around 8:45am in the area of McGee St. and Elrick Cr.

Police say the driver picked up a fare near London Rd. and Fleming St. earlier in the morning and made several stops throughout the city.

Constable John Sottosanti says once arriving at the final stop on McGee, the suspect demanded money from the driver.

"When the driver told him he had no money the suspect struck the victim in the face and when the taxi driver tried to call for help using his hand held mic, the suspect ripped the microphone out of the radio," says Sottosanti.

"The taxi driver was finally successful in getting out of the vehicle and the suspect located a cup in the front with pocket change in it and took the money."

The cabbie was not seriously injured in the incident. Two men in the area assisted the driver and called police.

The suspect is described as 5'7", 150 lbs with collar length black hair.

He was last seen running north on Mill St.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Sergeant Leo Murphy with the Sarnia Police Service Criminal Investigation Bureau, at 519-344-8861 (ext 6142) or Crime Stoppers.
