Wynne Government Promises Hydro Rebate

Ontario's liberal government says it will introduce legislation to rebate the provincial portion of the Harmonized Sales Tax on electricity bills effective January 1, 2017.

Details are included in Monday's throne speech, opening the second session of the province's 41st parliament.

If passed, the rebate will benefit residential, farm and small businesses, saving the typical household about $130 a year.

Bluewater Power CEO Janice McMichael-Dennis says every little bit helps, but says it will be up to the customers to decide whether it's enough.

"It will equate to approximately an $11 per month bill reduction for that average residential customer," says McMichael-Dennis.

"That will be applicable right across the province for non-rural Hydro One customers."

She says it comes at a good time for ratepayers.

"This will help with the end of the 10% bill credit which recently just ended. This will help fill that hole that was left by the ending of that program."

The government says eligible rural ratepayers would receive additional relief resulting in average savings of about $45 a month or $540 annually.

The throne speech also promises the creation of an additional 100,000 licenced infant to preschool child care spaces within the next five years.

Despite the new promises, the Kathleen Wynne government says it will balance the budget in 2017-2018.

It says over the last two years, Ontario's economy has grown by 6.1 % and unemployment, this year, has reached an eight-year low.
