Blue Water Bridge Renovations On Schedule

Renovations on the US side of the westbound Blue Water Bridge are on schedule to wrap up by mid-November.

The $11.8-million project has been ongoing since April. It includes sandblasting old paint and corrosion, and applying three layers of paint on top.

Michigan Department of Transportation spokesperson Jocelyn Hall says there have been no issues so far, but the weather is becoming less predictable.

"Painting is a very weather dependant activity, so we are keeping a close eye on weather predictions," says Hall. "If we're heading into any rainy spells we might have to adjust the contractor's timeline or maybe work on a Sunday when they weren't generally working to keep everything on schedule."

Hall says there haven't been many issues with traffic congestion. She says vehicle counts are down this year on the westbound span because many people are using alternate routes during construction.

The new paint is expected to last for up to 20 years, and will provide increased safety for motorists.
